President Trump will announce his decision on whether to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program on Tuesday, the White House announced.
“We are in the process of finalizing that decision and those details, and we are actually going to make that announcement on Tuesday of next week,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Friday.
“The president’s priorities on immigration are to create a system that encourages legal immigration and benefits our economy and American workers. The president has been very clear, he loves people and he wants to make sure this decision is done correctly.”
Trump had said earlier in the day that a decision on the fate of the program established in 2012 could come as soon as Friday afternoon or “sometime over the weekend.”
The White House has been under pressure to act as 10 states led by Texas have threatened court action against DACA unless Trump rescinds the program by Sept. 5.
The White House has been grappling with the future of the Obama-era program that extends temporary deportation relief to certain undocumented immigrants who applied for work permits with the federal government.
Trump promised to take a hard line on illegal immigration during his campaign, but has so far kept the program on the books.
